Kanheri Caves are an ancient Buddhist rock-cut cave complex located inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The complex contains 109 caves developed over many centuries from approximately the 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE. The caves include Buddhist monasteries, meditation chambers, prayer halls, stupas, sculptures, inscriptions and an advanced system of water cisterns and channels. Carved primarily from basalt rock, Kanheri is an important example of ancient Buddhist architecture, art and monastic life in western India. The surrounding forests and hills of Sanjay Gandhi National Park also provide a scenic natural setting for visitors.
